All the Star War Lightsaber Color Meanings Explained
The vast Star Wars universe has quite a few lightsaber colors, and each hue has its meaning that defines the personality of its wielder.
The world of lightsabers is fascinating yet confusing. Recently, I read some subreddits where many fans debated whether lightsaber colors have meaning.
One said, “That's Legends lore. Jedi lightsaber colors have no meaning in Canon at this time”. Someone replied, “But then if it doesn't mean anything, why have a canon color anyway?”
On another platform, Quora, a user asked, “Does the color of a lightsaber have any significance in Star Wars?”
Answering the question, many were confused.
Being a huge Star Wars fan, I couldn't help but research lightsaber color meanings. I did a lot of research and found that these blade hues have meaning. So, I will discuss what I’ve learned:
Common Lightsaber Colors
✔ Blue
✔ Green
✔ Red
-
Blue
Meaning |
It signifies bravery, justice, wisdom, and loyalty to the Force |
Wielders |
Jedi - Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, and Rey Skywalker |
First Appearance |
Star Wars: Episode IV—A New Hope (1977) |
Easter Egg |
It’s funny, but one who wields a blue lightsaber blade is doomed to failure. For example, Maul defeats Obi-Wan, Vader defeats Luke, and Vader kills Obi-Wan. |
In Star Wars: Episode IV—A New Hope, Luke and Obi-Wan Kenobi wielded the blue blade. Since then, it has been one of the most common Star Wars lightsaber colors.
Young Anakin Skywalker gets his blue lightsaber prequel trilogy when he constructs the blade under the guidance of his master, Kenobi.
Luke inherited his father’s saber from Master Kenobi, who took the blade from Darth Vader during a duel.
Rey does not get her Yellow lightsaber until the end of Rise of Skywalker. During the Battle of Takodana, she took the blue saber.
My Verdict On Blue Lightsaber
Blue is for bravery, justice, and loyalty to the Force. And there’s no denying the fact that all the wielders of the blue lightsaber are brave and courageous. Also, they are loyal to the Force (excluding Anakin Skywalker).
-
Green
Meaning |
It signifies strength, wisdom, peace, harmony, and kindness. |
Wielders |
Jedi Consulars and Jedi - Qui-Gon Jinn, Master Yoda, and Luke Skywalker |
First Appearance |
Star Wars: Episode VI—Return of the Jedi (1983) |
Easter Egg |
Anakin Skywalker wields a green lightsaber in The Clone Wars to honour his Padawan Ahsoka Tano. |
Wise Jedi masters like Yoda and Luke usually use this lightsaber. They are experienced individuals with a strong connection with the Force and can often be seen making decisions promoting peace and harmony within the galaxy.
Yoda’s lightsaber, also known as the Shoto type, dates back to when he was an apprentice.
Qui-Gon Jinn created his blade after he lost his first saber in the Telos IV mission. The Obi-Wan’s master used the green lightsaber in 44 BBY during a fight against Xanatos.
After losing his first blade, Luke Skywalker constructed his green lightsaber. At Christophsis, he met Dr. Cuata, who gave him a blank crystal that turned green. Using it, he creates his green blade.
My Verdict On Green Lightsaber
Green in a lightsaber means wisdom and kindness. Everyone - Qui-Gon Jinn, Master Yoda, and Luke Skywalker - who uses this particular blade in Star Wars is wise and kind.
-
Red
Meaning |
It signifies power, aggression, danger, and anger. |
Wielders |
Sith Lords - Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Darth Sidious, and Count Dooku |
First Appearance |
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) |
Easter Egg |
A red lightsaber is usually associated with darkness, but the saber is also used by Some Jedi like Luke and Adi Gallia. |
The red lightsaber is usually associated with the dark side. Notorious Star Wars characters like Darth Vader and Darth Sidious reflected their dangerous side to the galaxy with red blades.
The story of the red saber is fascinating. When the Jedi prohibited the Sith from getting Kyber crystals, which give a color to a blade, they started using synthetic crystals that emit the color red.
My Verdict On Red Lightsaber
If, as I found during my research, red is associated with anger and aggression, then we can conclude that all the Sith lords who use a red lightsaber show anger and aggression during various events in Star Wars.
In this case, it is safe to say that a red saber is about power, aggression, danger, and anger.
Rare Lightsaber Colors
✔ Purple
✔ Yellow
✔White
✔Orange
✔ Pink and Magenta
-
Purple
Meaning |
It signifies strength, balance, and wisdom |
Wielders |
Jedi Masters - Mace Windu, Jaina Solo, and Revan |
First Appearance |
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002) |
Easter Egg |
The purple lightsaber of Mace Windu was the first non-blue or non-green saber in Star Wars. |
When it comes to purple, the first name that pops into our minds is Mace Windu.
However, there are other masters too who use this rare blade; Jaina Solo and Revan are two of them.
Although I didn’t find any hidden meaning in the purple saber, I did find that some Star Wars Legends link it to strength, balance, and wisdom. Some theories also suggest that color balances the light and dark sides.
My Verdict On Purple Lightsaber
Mace Windu is powerful and wise. Also, he shows balance at different times, especially during his duel against Palpatine in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.
So, we can conclude that Mace Windu’s purple lightsaber is a fine example of strength, balance, and wisdom.
-
Yellow
Meaning |
It signifies sacrifice, protection, hope, optimism, and warmth. |
Wielders |
Luke Skywalker, Rey, Jedi Temple guards, Asajj Ventress, Tyvokka, and Plo Koon |
First Appearance |
Comic Book - Tales of the Jedi (1993) |
Easter Egg |
In Star Wars lore, Jedi Temple Guards have the yellow lightsaber. Rey’s wields the rare blade to pay homage to this legacy. |
Honestly, I had a hunch that Rey and Jedi Temple guards are the only individuals in the galaxy to use the rare yellow lightsaber. But when I dug deeper, I discovered that many others wielded the blade.
Apart from the names I mentioned in the table, I noticed many other characters with the yellow saber. They include:
✔ Ganner Rhysode
✔ Bastila Shan
✔ Mallie Marek
✔ Anja Gallandro
✔ Yun
My Verdict On Yellow Lightsaber
Star Wars is filled with stories of Luke and Rey’s sacrifice, optimism, and dedication to protect the galaxy. Also, Jedi Temple guards are there for protection. So, the yellow lightsaber indeed means sacrifice, protection, hope, optimism, and warmth.
-
White
Meaning |
It signifies a new beginning, purity, and independence. |
Wielders |
Ahsoka Tano and Kanan Jarrus |
First Appearance |
Star Wars Rebels (Fire Across the Galaxy) |
Easter Egg |
Ahsoka Tan’s lightsaber originally featured a red blade. She used her connection to The Force to purify it from the dark side’s corruption, which turned it into white. |
It is indeed a rare lightsaber, as few in the Star Wars universe wield it. The first and most obvious name that comes to mind is Ahsoka Tano.
How does Ahsoka prove a new beginning, purity, and independence?
When Ahsoka’s character is first introduced, she shows signs of independence. Even in The Mandalorian, she stands alone against Morgan Elsbeth.
The former Padawan of Anakin Skywalker leaves the traditional Jedi path, but still, she follows the Light Side of the Force.
My Verdict On White Lightsaber
Seeing Ahsoka’s character, we can conclude that she is an independent and pure individual on a journey to new beginnings.
-
Orange
Meaning |
It signifies ambition, creativity, and hope. |
Wielders |
Cal Kestis, Master Plo Koon, Jedi Master Yaddle, Baylan Skoll, and Shin Hati |
First Appearance |
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order |
Easter Egg |
The rare lightsaber was a weapon used by force-sensitive individuals known as Gray Jedi. |
It is a rare blade. Not only is it seen only a few times in the entire Star Wars universe, but it also took me hours to discover its first appearance.
Although finding Cal Kestis from Jedi: Fallen Order wasn’t challenging, spotting Jedi Master Yaddle with an orange blade was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Apart from them, Baylan and Shin from Ahsoka can be spotted with the rare lightsaber.
My Verdict On Orange Lightsaber
Cal Kestis is ambitious and creative. Is it true for others, too? I am unsure, as we don’t see them doing something extraordinary with the blade in their hands.
-
Pink Or Magenta
Meaning |
They signify peace, harmony, and compassion |
Wielders |
Jedi Master Adi Gallia, Ahsoka Tano, and Mara Jade |
First Appearance |
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Knights |
Easter Egg |
Luke's lightsaber is originally pink. It can be seen on the cover of Star Wars #2 (Star Wars comics) |
How many of you know that Ahsoka Tano’s lightsabers can turn pink? Although her blades are colorless or white, they become pink under certain circumstances.
Jedi Council member and Jedi Master Adi Gallia also wields the pink saber and is known for her decision-making abilities while ensuring peace.
Mara Jade’s lightsaber color is magenta, and it is believed that Emperor Palpatine gifted her the blade for her loyalty.
My Verdict On Pink/Magenta Lightsaber
All three wilders - Jedi Master Adi Gallia, Ahsoka Tano, and Mara Jade - are loyal to their respective sides. So, the meaning of this saber’s color is justified.
Rarest Lightsaber Colors
-
Darksaber or Black Saber
Meaning |
Strength, authority and aggression |
Wielders |
Tarre Vizsla, Pre Vizsla and Sabine Wre, Moff Gideon, Din Djarin, and Bo-Katan Kryze |
First Appearance |
Star Wars: The Clone Wars |
Easter Egg |
The Darksaber has appeared in the two major animated shows, Rebels and The Clone Wars. However, there is no sign of it in any Star Wars movie. The Black Saber’s first live-action appearance is in The Mandalorian. |
Although it’s the rarest lightsaber, we all have seen it.
The unique, rare blade is seen in The Mandalorian. Although the black lightsaber is associated with the Sith and the dark side, its wielders are also from the light side.
Forged by Mandalorian Jedi Tarre Vizsla, the Darksaber was wielded by many - including the Sith and good guys like the Mandalorian.
My Verdict On Darksaber
It’s hard to sum up the significance of Darksaber in just a few words. The black lightsaber depicts strength and power, but it cannot be only associated with the dark side. Many from the other side wield this rare blade.
Wrap Up
That’s it. This is why I learned about all lightsaber colors and their meanings. It’s true that these iconic weapons aren’t discussed in great detail in Star Wars, but they indeed have a meaning. What do you say?
