'The Acolyte' Won’t Get a Second Season at Lucasfilm
Shocking! The latest Star Wars Disney+ series will end after its first season.
‘The Acolyte’ is not coming back for a second season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lucasfilm has decided to cancel the Disney+ Star Wars series, which just wrapped up its first season last month.
While the show received decent reviews from critics, it was poorly received by viewers, earning only 18 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Some people criticized the show for being too “woke” and targeted its creator, Leslye Headland, and its diverse cast.
In June, Leslye Headland expressed her disappointment to THR, saying, “It’s upsetting that some people think being gay is a bad thing. It makes me sad that a lot of people online would attack what I see as my most important work.”
Also in June, star Amandla Stenberg responded to racist criticism with an original song posted on social media.
One source mentioned that the controversy over the show might have influenced its cancellation, hurting how people viewed it.
The Acolyte was set around 100 years before Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace.
Amandla Stenberg played twin sisters Mae and Osha, who were separated as children. Mae was aligned with the Dark Side, while Osha was a previous Padawan of a respected Jedi Master.
The series also starred Carrie-Anne Moss, Charlie Barnett, Dean-Charles Chapman, Lee Jung-jae, Rebecca Henderson, Dafne Keen, Jodie-Turner Smith, Manny Jacinto, Joonas Suotamo, and others.
The show ended with intriguing storylines and hinted at a return of the popular character Yoda.
Manny Jacinto’s villain, The Stranger, gained popularity and even has a life-size helmet from Hasbro. However, viewership numbers weren't high enough to justify a second season.
