Two Kyle Katarn designs from one era
From Sulon to the Jedi Council
Born on Sulon and commissioned into the Imperial military, Kyle Katarn wore the uniform before he questioned it. His defection to the Rebel Alliance brought with it something the Rebellion rarely encountered: an officer's training combined with a willingness to work in the shadows. Paired with fellow agent Jan Ors, he ran covert operations that struck at the Empire's most ambitious projects — among them the Dark Trooper Programme.
The turning point came not on a battlefield but in the search for himself. Learning he was Force-sensitive, Katarn did what few Jedi candidates ever do — taught himself, without a master, while hunting for the Valley of the Jedi. That search forced him to face the dark side from the inside out, and then in the form of High Inquisitor Jerec. Defeating Jerec there made him a Jedi Master.
Jedi Master was not the end of the arc. Katarn fell to the dark side, was redeemed by his padawan Mara Jade, cut himself from the Force entirely, and eventually returned — to the Praxeum, to teaching, and finally to a seat on the New Jedi Order's High Council. Both designs on this page trace that full span: soldier to shadow operative to Jedi Master.
Few lives in the Legends era were rewritten as many times as his — and each rewrite made the legend harder to put down.
Which Kyle Katarn lightsaber should I buy?
Both designs suit Legends-era collectors — silver hilt for Neopixel depth or Proffie 2.2 customisation, black-and-silver for Xenopixel V3 versatility; baselit suits duelists who prioritise handle feel over blade effects.
Which hilt is which
One design is the silver hilt from the Expanded Universe broadly — Katarn's saber across the novels and Dark Forces games. The second adds a black-and-silver colourway tied specifically to Star Wars: Jedi Knight II – Jedi Outcast, the game that put him on screen as a fully realised Jedi.
Which Saber Core
S-RGB and RGB-X are the baselit cores — heavy-duelling rated, with a solid colour blade and the lowest entry price. Xenopixel V3, SNV4 PRO and Proffie 2.2 are all Neopixel cores, lighting the full blade length with smooth swing and motion-reactive effects; Proffie 2.2 adds open-source programmability for those who want total control. All three Neopixel cores are rated for light duelling and display.
Which suits you
Duelists who want heavy-duelling rated and focused on handle over blade effects suit Baselit. Collectors drawn to Katarn's full Legends arc — or the Jedi Knight II game specifically — will find the Neopixel designs the right fit. Proffie 2.2 is the one for the programmer who wants to build Katarn's soundscape from scratch.
